Qover is turning 10 this year. So we thought it was time we sat down with five women from across the company to ask them what it's really like to work here.

Whether they’ve been here since the beginning or recently started their career with us, we talk about what brought them through the door to what keeps them, being a woman in insurtech and what they hope comes next.

1. What brought you to Qover and what's kept you here?

Caroline: I was at a point in my career where I really wanted to have a leadership position, and then I found the General Counsel role at Qover. I wasn’t dreaming of working in insurance. But when I looked at the job description it really sealed the deal because they were looking for someone who was actively involved in the business. Legal, compliance and regulatory work was really part of the value proposition.

I also realised that the culture of the company was very different from other big, established financial institutions. The atmosphere is certainly a key element in why I’ve stayed for 5 years. It's really a people-centric company where everyone is valued and there’s a really good sense of belonging. It’s also really exciting that we’re evolving with technology. We’re really leveraging AI to deliver the best services for customers. 

Janine: I had just moved from Brazil and I was searching for a job. It was a very nice surprise because what kept me was the nice atmosphere and the people. I felt supported, especially being from a foreign country. It's important for me that I'm comfortable but also challenged – and that's what I feel at Qover every day. There’s no dull moment.

Chloé: What brought me to Qover is really the tech aspect of the company. And what really kept me here is the vibe overall, the people and the culture – whether it's always being nice to each other, challenging each other and really building this team spirit. 

Nat: When I started as a consultant, I really felt good energy and good vibes. It was very nice to see the motivation that the co-founders had, and they wanted to bring something different. And even now, 10 years later, I can feel it's still there.

Sylva: I saw the ad on LinkedIn and I knew that my best friend worked here too. She told me a lot of nice things about how everyone helps each other here, how everyone listens to you and how it's a safe space to work in. That's something I really look for in a job, and I found it here.

2. Qover's turning 10 this year – what's changed since you joined, and what's stayed the same?

Caroline: A lot of things changed. On a strategic level, we really sharpened our offering. We robustified our products. We have very clear positioning and we managed to create something really unique on the market: an embedded insurance platform that combines modern technology and regulatory expertise. 

Despite growing a lot, the culture and atmosphere in the company really remained the same. When I read our values, they’re still embraced by everyone. There is no ego or politics. It's still a very collaborative and psychologically safe environment for everyone, and I think it enables everyone to continue innovating. It's really rewarding to see that people who started at Qover, maybe as their first job, have now taken on management and leadership roles.

Janine: What stayed the same? Definitely the energy. The people we've kept or hired always have this energy and this passion of making things happen.

What changed? Definitely the size. We're not a small company anymore.

Nat: I started as employee number eight. Now we’re more than 150. 

I have the feeling that in the beginning we were all generalists – we were all doing everything. And now we’re specialists. We became a very professional company, but we’re trying to keep that atmosphere.

When our co-founder Jean-Charles Velge first hired me he said, 'You’ll see, we have 10 people now, but we’ll be more than 100 in a few years.' And I was like, ‘Okay, this guy is a bit crazy.’ But now we can see the results. So it's nice to see that the vision they had worked.

Chloé: I feel like we’ve definitely levelled up as a company. Our clients are getting bigger, our projects as well – we're involving more and more people. And with levelling up, we’ve introduced way more structure. I can really see the difference even in a year and a half – that's how you realise how quickly things are going. But something that never changed is just how dynamic people are and how eager we are to get things done.

3. Can you tell us about a moment at Qover where you felt really proud of what you were doing?

Janine: I can’t think of one moment, but more of the small wins. Every time we stretch ourselves to help a customer or when we cheer for paying a claim, it always reminds me of our goal of helping people. That makes me proud.

Chloé: It’s always nice when we're able to demonstrate the product and see the sparkle in a client's eyes. It's very rewarding to see what you've been working on for so long. 

4. What's it like being a woman in your field? Has your experience at Qover been different from other places you've worked?

Caroline: We’re in an industry where historically there are more men than women, especially in management and leadership positions. Very often in my career I was the only woman at the table. At Qover it's very different: we have 53% female professionals. But what’s really important is that we have 47% women in management positions, and that's what makes the difference.

In many companies you have a lot of women in the beginning, but keeping those women interested and motivated is a different story. That's where, in the tech or financial industries, we lose a lot of women along the way.

Here at Qover, that’s not the case. We mentor and coach women, we make sure that they don't have obstacles to their career. Because there's still a lot of bias from women themselves – they might underestimate their strength and their value. So we put a lot of focus, with the HR team and at management level, to make sure that women really feel they have a role to play in this company. We also have no gender pay gap at Qover because we took measures to make sure that’s the case. Qover is different because there’s a clear message to have an environment that promotes equal opportunity.

Janine: In every industry we still have this stereotype that a team lead needs to be tough. At Qover, I was always supported to be myself – to be empathetic, to be kind. I didn't need to be super tough to be a good leader. It helped me to see other female leaders at Qover – how supportive and open they were to share their strengths and vulnerabilities.

Nat: When I started, I think we were only two women and seven men. But I always felt comfortable and listened to. They hired me to be a designer and they always trusted me for what I was doing. I’ve always had a lot of freedom.

Chloé: What I enjoy at Qover is that there's a lot of women that I can look up to – women in management positions and women I work with on a daily basis. It's great to feel surrounded by people like me that I can look up to and get inspired by.

Sylva: Coming into a company where we're actually mostly women is really refreshing. I have this sense of belonging, of cosiness – someplace safe. Working in a department where there are a lot of women, I don't feel like I have to prove myself; I can just focus on my performance.

5. What advice would you give to women who are thinking about joining the insurtech or tech industry?

Caroline: Don't be intimidated by the labels – labels that people can put on you, but also labels you might put on this industry yourself. Insurtech was not what I was looking for initially, but I went past that first layer to really look at the mission of the company and the culture.

And don't underestimate the power of being different. Being different is really an asset. Maybe women might think that they’re not the best profile for this kind of industry – that's totally wrong. See your strengths and your differences as an asset for innovation.

Janine: Working in tech can look intimidating, but at the end of the day it's about solving problems together. It doesn't matter if you don't know everything – everybody needs to learn something along the way. And not only in tech, but in every single industry, we do need this ‘woman's touch’. It doesn't matter if you don't know everything. It matters what you’re here to bring.

Nat: If you’re good at what you are doing, just do it. Because you have a place, and people will listen to what you give to the company. It may look like it's a man's world, but it’s for women too. 

Chloé: You belong here just as much as anyone else. Tech is very open because it's still very new – let's take that to our advantage. It's a sector where I felt very appreciated for what I am. At the end of the day, every idea deserves to be heard no matter who you are.

6. When you think about the work you do here, what impact do you hope it has?

Chloé: The insurance sector is really transforming itself. With the future being less and less certain, I think insurance is really the main character when it comes to reassuring people and making people's lives easier. And if things get tough, we're still here to help. Knowing that you have someone there for you – like a claims agent helping you fix a trip that got cancelled – that's comfort in that.

Sylva: As part of the claims team, we’re on the front line when it comes to dealing with customers. People are going through difficult times – you can read it when they're describing their situations. And I hope it will continue to create a space where people can get the help they deserve. There are humans behind this company, and for me, I hope Qover becomes synonymous with helping people.

7. Looking ahead – what are you most excited about for Qover's next chapter?

Caroline: What’s really exciting is that with modern technology and especially AI, we’ll be able to achieve compliance by design at a scale that wasn’t possible before. Regulatory compliance will go beyond being embedded in the product, but we’ll be able to do it for more products and geographies. 

Janine: Are we going to crack the one product or is it going to be multiple products? What kind of people are going to join us and bring other perspectives? In Qover's history, it's always been someone new that brings a different perspective and helps us grow. It's exciting to see what else we can learn and what we can achieve.
